Practical information for visiting Topkapi Palace

Prohibited Items

The palace enforces strict policies regarding what items are allowed inside, and security staff will confiscate anything prohibited at the entrances. Large bags, backpacks, food and beverages (other than water bottles), professional camera equipment and tripods, sharp objects or weapons, and pets (except service animals) are not permitted.

Photography and Filming Restrictions

Photography is restricted in certain areas, including the Sacred Relics section, designated “No Photography” zones, and special exhibitions, and flash photography is prohibited throughout the palace. Professional or commercial photography is only allowed with advance permission and may require additional fees.

Dress code

Topkapi Palace requires visitors to dress modestly out of respect for its historical and religious significance, while staying comfortable for walking. Clothing should cover shoulders and knees at all times. Women should avoid sleeveless tops, low-cut necklines, and skirts or shorts above the knee, while men should not wear sleeveless shirts or shorts above mid-thigh. Visitors wearing inappropriate clothing may be denied entry or asked to purchase coverings, with staff enforcing these rules throughout the day.

Stricter standards apply in sacred areas, including the Sacred Relics department and the Treasury. Shoulders and knees must be fully covered, hats or head coverings removed unless for religious reasons, and silence and respectful behavior are expected. Guards closely monitor these areas and will redirect anyone not appropriately dressed.

Smoking

Smoking is strictly prohibited (including e-cigarettes) to prevent the risk of fires and to avoid exposing other visitors to second-hand smoke.
